Fishermen proscribed on Australian waters
[14 Feb 2001]

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry official advised local fishermen not to enter into Australian territorial waters. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Australia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conveyed this message to fishermen by instructing them through district officers.

The main reason for this warning of prohibition to the Australian water, is due to the emerging number of fishermen taken into custody by the Australian coastal authorities.

The first vessel, which was taken into custody by Australian authorities, was last month, while fishing in the territorial waters and the vessel has been fined Rs. 3.5 million.  Another fishing boat, which had departed from Mirissa, was also taken into custody.
