Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar met the Secretary-General of Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other high-ranking officials and briefed on the economic situation in Sri Lanka and opportunities available for Saudi entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka. On his suggestion the Chamber agreed to send a delegation to Sri Lanka to discuss the training of migrant workers in order to expand employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the Kingdom. Sri Lankan expatriate community in Saudi Arabia numbers nearly 300,000. King Fahd expressed his appreciation of the good work being done by the Sri Lankan workers and their contribution in Saudi Arabia towards the development of the Kingdom. Kadirgamar who is presently on a goodwill visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was received in audience by King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques at Al Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. His programme in Saudi Arabia included official talks with his counterpart, Prince Saud Al Faizal, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Ibrahim Al Asaf, Minister of Finance and National Economy. The Minister handed over a letter from President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to King Fahd. He requested the Foreign Minister to convey his greetings to the President of Sri Lanka and stated that she was most welcome to visit his Kingdom at a convenient time. Minister Kadirgamar recalled in detail the historic relations between Sri Lanka and the Arab world which extend over many centuries and close bilateral relations existing between the two countries. He also referred to the productive and constructive role that the Muslim community has always played in the development of Sri Lanka. The Crown Prince pledged his support to promote economic and other relations between the two countries. He expressed his hope that the people of Sri Lanka would soon achieve peace in order to concentrate their efforts on the development of the country. Minister Kadirgamar’s visit will pave way to expand the existing relations and to diversify into new areas of cooperation.
