Anura 52 today

Speaker Anura Bandaranaike celebrates his 52^nd birthday today. He was unanimously Elected speaker of the 11^th Parliament last year. Another significant incident regarding this appointment is that Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe jointly proposed his name as the Speaker. 

Anura Bandaranaike enjoys the privilege of being the only Speaker in the world of two former Prime Ministers-S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the world’s first woman Prime Minister. He is the brother of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

He was elected to the Parliament at the age of 28 from Nuwara Eliya – Maskeliya seat. He was the Opposition Leader in 1983 when the then UNP government removed the civic rights of his mother Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
