Tanden Lanka Ltd, a company in the Pallekelle Investment Promotion Zone in Kandy producing computer software will undertake a massive extension program with an investment of Rs. 10 billion. At the completion of this extension program the company will offer employment to another 1000 people.

This follows discussions Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development Minister and Deputy Finance Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris had with the company management during an inspection tour of its factory recently.

Tanden Lanka, which began operations in 1996, faced marketing problems for its products on account of the economic crisis in East Asian countries. Thereafter it diversified into the production of memory modules in keeping with a new trade agreement with its principals and started re-training its managers, engineers and workers accordingly said a press release issued by the Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development Ministry.

Starting with 100 memory modules per day in 1999 the factory increased its capacity significantly to 3000 modules per day. During the last two and a half years the factory had invested 5 million US dollars on this production program.

Under the latest extension program it plans to invest another 10 million US dollars over the next 2 years with a view to expanding its production capacity from 3000 to 10,000 modules per day. Accordingly the present workforce which is 1600 will be increased to 2500 by the end of this year and to 3000 by the end of next year. The factory has so far exported a consignment of memory modules worth 30 million US dollars to USA, UK, Switzerland, Singapore, India and Dubai, it was revealed at these discussions.
