The Agricultural Insurance Board (AIB) has initiated a special insurance scheme for the benefit of poor farming families who encounter difficulties in making their annual contributions, to the Agricultural Insurance Scheme. Members of farming families employed abroad can now join the agricultural nsurance schemes to ensure the future welfare of their dependents living in Sri Lanka. This task is made possible through the "Middle East Service" of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC). The Sri Lankans working abroad are constantly being informed of the benefits of the schemes through this programme. "Foreign employees can inform the AIB the details of their relatives in Sri Lanka. Once such information is received we send our officials to the respective addresses and assist them to join the insurance scheme", an AIB official revealed. The official further said that the board would provide facilities for them to open NRFC accounts at any People's Bank branch to deposit money in the name of their spouse, parent or children. The AIB was able to reach its target of enrolling 100,000 farmers by the year 2000 and the total number of beneficiaries now exceeds 600,000.
