Woman arrested for extortion posed as close friend of President

The CID, yesterday in Dehiwela, arrested a woman who posed as a close friend of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and cheated several millions of rupees.

The woman had promised houses built from the President's Funds and employment abroad. The CID appeals to the public not to be deceived by her.

Investigations have revealed that the woman had posed off as a doctor, assisting a leading surgeon in the country. She had been convicted on six previous occasions on cheating charges, the CID said.

She had collected Rs.2 million from a couple in Dehiwela stating she will send their two sons to Australia with the assistance of the President. 

In another occasion, she had collected Rs.100, 000 from a senior officer of the Dehiwela Zoo promising to admit her sons to Royal College, Colombo, prestigious boy’s school.

The CID appealed to the public to inform them on telephone number 422172, if any persons had been defrauded.
