SL gets military assistance from Czech
[16 Feb 2001]

The Czech Republic will provide Sri Lanka’s army with fresh weapons and training to battle Tamil Tiger terrorists who are fighting for over two decades for a separate state in the north and east of the island.

Czech Defence Minister Vladimir Vetchy who arrived in Colombo late on Wednesday said his country would keep up supplies of military equipment to Sri Lanka.

Czech-built Grad Multi-Barrel Rockctek Lanuchrers helped to stall Tiger offensives and turn back the tide. Since then Sri Lanka has purchased a large consignment of military equipment from the Czech Republic.

He had promised that his country would also help train Sri Lankan soldiers. Vetchy’s visit would strengthen the diplomatic ties between the two governments.

Vetchy met Deputy Defence Minister Anurudha Rthwatte and was scheduled to hold talks with President Kumaratunga.

He will leave the island on Saturday.
