The National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS), under the Agricultural Department allayed fears that viruses were detected in imported fruits. The denial came after information leaked out that the NPQS had done a study and isolated 27varieties of viruses in imported fruits. A member of the public who was privy to the information said that the findings were not being made public due to pressures from fruit importers. However, the NPQS did warn that in certain cases, the seeds, if after consumption of the fleshy parts, are planted, there is a danger of virus spread. Such viruses are citrus leaf rugose ilavirus, citrus tatter leaf capillovirus and citrus variegation ilavirus. Apples, pears and prunes also have seed-transmitted viruses. However, bud grafts now propagate most of these crops. If the stock plants are from seed, there is a possibility of virus transmission.
