Concern has mounted as the terrorism act in Britain is reported to be enforced from today. Speculation has arisen both locally and internationally whether the LTTE is included in the list and as a result be banned in the UK. The list of organizations has not yet been released by the British government. However, British Home Secretary Jack Straw told parliament on Thursday that the new act would come in to force from today. Meanwhile, reports from London stated that there will be two proscribed lists, one titled "Domestic Terrorist Orgainsations" and the other "Overseas Terrorist Organisations". The reluctance shown by the British government to ban the LTTE while its ban on the Irish Republican Army (IRA) under the Prevention Terrorism Act has drawn heavy criticism from foreign governments. Political observers have pointed out that since such a ban had not marred the British-IRA peace process in Britain, the LTTE-ban in UK would not affect the current developments in the Lankan peace negotiations with the Tigers.
