Czechs ready to provide military assistance to Sri Lanka [19 February 2001] The Czech Republic delegation which arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday met the Minister of Foreign Affairs and had detailed discussions with Defence Secretary. They also visited the Sir John Kotalawala Defence Academy. 

The Czech Republic is ready to help Sri Lanka develop the security forces and the country's military academies. 

The Czech Minister of Defence Dr. Vladimir Vetchy on Thursday met President Chandrika Kumaratunga. During the meeting President Kumaratunga expressed her gratitude for the steady assistance and co-operation extended by the Czech Republic to Sri Lanka with regard to the current security problems.

Suggestions to build up closer co-operation in the fields of trade and industry were put forward at the conference. The potential to develop tourism was also a subject of interest for both the Czech delegation and Sri Lanka. The Czech delegation also confirmed its commitment to assist in maintaining the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka and appreciated the democratic traditions upheld in the country since the country gained independence in1948.
