Government increases relief grants by US$ 22 to poor
[19 Feb 2001]

Comprehending the fact that the cost of living is going up due to high oil prices and ongoing war, the Government of Sri Lanka has decided to increase the relief granted to those who are living below the poverty line by US$ 22.

It is a well-known phenomenon that a considerable portion of the Sri Lankan population earns less than one dollar per day or lives below the poverty line. With the prime aim to uplift the living standard of the poor, the Government introduced the programme of Samurdhi. Under this programme those families whose income is not sufficient to redeem from poverty received US$ 28 per month, which is now up by US$ 22.

By introducing various avenues of income, the Government hopes to redeem one million out of 2 million Samurdhi recipient families in the island from poverty.

The Government has already commenced a large-scale programme to stabilise the income of the poor and to raise their income. Small scale industries have been launched in the villages using the capital of Samurdhi recipients themselves and the goods produced by them are now being exported, the Secretary to the Samurdhi Ministry Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathne said.

Action will be taken in this manner to redeem 200,000 Samurdhi families from poverty this year and another one million families in the next six years.
