The "Way forward" for development - nine trade chambers meet President today

The Joint Forum of Trade Chambers, an umbrella organisation of nine trade chambers will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the President's House today.

The discussions are expected to centre around the private sector recommendations for sustainable economic development in consonance with the Government's proposed policy initiatives outlined in Vision 21. 

The Chambers are expected to hand over to the President a document titled: "Way Forward" specifying in detail, how to tackle issues relating to economic development. The nine trade chambers are: Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, The National Chamber of Commerce, the Employers Federation, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the International Chamber of Commerce, the Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industries and the National Chamber of Exporters.

The Joint Forum of Trade Chambers will also recommend to President Kumaratunga methods on how the Government and the private sector could work in partnership in various spheres of development including infrastructure development, investment promotion, construction, plantations, agriculture, tourism, fisheries and housing. Some of the issues in the report, which relate to the overall economic climate, are general security, labour laws, education and skills development and taxation. The meeting will also focus on education, training, skills development and human resources development.
