Integrating South Asia for global economy is prime objective for US

“One of the prime objectives of US is to help South Asians to eliminate armed conflicts in the region and to integrate the region into a dynamic global economy” said the US Ambassador Ashley Wills at the inaugural ceremony of a series of workshops organised by the United States Agency for International Development [USAID] at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi, yesterday.

The slogan of the workshop and the first initiative taken by the USAID towards South Asia is “ Consumer Outstretch, Marketing Energy Efficiency”.  The workshop aim to educate consumers on how to make the best use of more energy efficient technologies and how to mount marketing campaign aimed at broad segments of a country’s population.  This four-day workshop is participated by 25 participants from South Asia i. e. Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh.    

His Excellency further stated “ The South Asia Regional Initiative [SARIE] was launched by former President Bill Clinton in March 2000 during his visit to India.” Although South Asia promise for large scale of economic growth certain challenges appear in areas rather than energy needs of business, industry and citizens of the region.  Therefore, Ambassador Ashley Wills said, this workshop will cater all the areas that need help in meeting the task. 

Arjun Deraniyagala, CEB Chairman, the Chief Guest said the very concept of the SARIE programme to bring together all the countries of the region to work on a common policy as the energy sector was of vital importance. The Mission Director of USAID/Sri Lanka, Vicki Moor also spoke at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop yesterday.
