Collision in colombo Port costs 10 million US dollars

An Italian registered vessel rammed a container berth at the Colombo port and seriously damaged a gantry crane last Sunday.

Port sources said that the vessel LT. Greet, stacked with 2000 Twenty-foot-Equivalent Units had encountered an engine fault while being berthed and rammed the JCT 1, South Asia's biggest container terminal, derailing a large gantry crane.

According to reliable sources, the initial estimate of the damage was around 10 million US dollars.

The Vessel carrying a cargo of 1324 containers on arrival in Colombo, was manned by a 23-member crew of Filipinos and Italians.

Full investigations into the accident were continuing while the ship has been detained at the Colombo port.
