‘safe sea corridor’ for Lankan fishermen
[20 Feb 2001]

Sri Lanka will discuss with India a ‘safe sea corridor’ for its fishermen seeking access to international waters in the Arabian sea to avoid legal problems while they are on Indian territorial waters.

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Foreign Minister will visit India in May to discuss the problems faced by the fishermen who often get arrested for trespassing into India’s exclusive Economic Zone.

“We hope to get India to agree to a route closer to Indian shores, so that our fishermen would not drift towards Maldivian territorial waters by mistake.” Forein Ministry sources revealed.

The necessity for a safe sea corridor arose after frequent incidents of Sri Lankan fishermen found in India’s territorial waters ending up in jail.
