All Ministers and Deputy Ministers have been told to immediately comply with the directive of the President pertaining to the limits of usage of official vehicles, fuel and telephones allocated to their respective Ministries, Offices of the Deputy Ministers and their personal staff, a Presidential Secretariat press release stated. The President issued orders in the first week of February to reduce the day-to-day expenses of Ministers and their staff in order to utilise the resultant savings towards development activities beneficial to the public. Regulations were issued to limit the personal staff of Ministers (including drivers) to 20 and the staff of Deputy Ministers to 10. Earlier this number was 34. Accordingly the number of official vehicles for Ministers and their staff too was reduced sharply. By this a Minister becomes entitled to use 8 vehicles including 5 vehicles for the personal staff. A Deputy Minister becomes entitled to the use of 5 vehicles including 2 for the staff. The President issued orders to the Ministry Secretaries to report to the Finance Ministry Secretary any vehicles in excess of these limits so that such vehicles could be released to other sectors where they become useful. In addition, the monthly expenditure borne by the Government in respect of vehicles used by Ministers and Deputy Ministers has been limited to a maximum of Rs.10,000 for a Diesel vehicle and Rs.50,000 for a Petrol vehicle. The President has expressed the hope that the Ministers would prove themselves illustrious leaders by strengthening the steps taken at this juncture, when the war expenditure is escalating rapidly and the state expenditure is increasing due to the expansion of the scope of Ministerial activities in addition to unexpected hikes in oil prices, the press release states further.
