SLBC to step into digital broadcasting era
[22 Feb 2001]

Sri Lanka’s pioneer broadcasting service, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation [SLBC] completed its 75 years of broadcasting yesterday.

Opening the ceremony, which was held at the BMICH, the Media Minister, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that during this 75-year time span the SLBC has gone through many memorable occasions like the one we are celebrating today. SLBC was earlier known as the Radio Ceylon Corporative in 1967.

Today, the SLBC has developed its services to meet the challenges of the digital broadcasting era.  Therefore, the Minister emphatically stated that the Government would maintain the credibility the SLBC has gained throughout the years.

Minister Yapa further stated the SLBC should be proud to have the largest music library in Asia and efforts will be made to open this library to the public.  The Minister further said that the SLBC should reach the younger generation while maintaining its independence.

The Government reiterates that the SLBC will not be privatised, but will meet the challenges of the new age.
