CBK consolidates regional ties
[26 Feb 2001]

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga finished successful rounds of discussions with Indian Prime Minister and emerged from talks expressing satisfaction over the progress in getting the stalled SAARC process under way again.

CBK held talks with the Indian leaders on the two-decade- old civil war in Sri Lanka and efforts to revive the SAARC regional forum.

President Kumaratunga's initiative for the resumption of the stalled SAARC process is being hailed in Delhi as a "breakthrough " for the consolidation of the regional body.

The 'Indian Express' reported the President's visit as a move to "break ice over SAARC."

The Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement, civil aviation ties and problem of Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody were among the other issues taken into discussion.
