A ceremony was held today at the Presidential Secretariat presided over by Her Excellency the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, to present compensation money to dependants of the victims of the Bindunu Wewa rehabilitation camp incident. The wife of late Minister M H M Ashraff, Hon. Mrs. Farial Ashraff, Minister of Development, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of the East and Rural Housing Development, Hon. Douglas Devananda, Minister of Development, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of the North and Tamil Affairs, North and East, Hon. Susil Premjayanth, Minister of Education, Hon. Reginald Cooray, Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council and Hon. S B Dissanayake, Minister of Samurdhi, Rural and Upcountry Development & the Deputy Minister of Finance also attended the ceremony. President Kumaratunga conveyed the deepest sympathies of the government to the dependants of the victims, who attended the ceremony. She stressed that the compensation paid cannot value the lives that were lost in the Bindunu Wewa incident and promised to take necessary measures to prevent such unfortunate situations in the future.
