Sri Lankan Muslims protest Taliban's move to destroy Buddha Statues
[01 Mar 2001]

The Muslims in Sri Lanka expressed grave concern over the outrageous move taken by the Taliban militia to destroy all Buddha statues in Afghanistan and described it as a "criminal act on all religions".

M. H. Mohamed, Deputy President of the World Muslim Congress and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre said that he was shocked by the news, which he considered as "an inhuman act on all religions in the world".

He also said further action would be taken to verify this disturbing news from the World Muslim Congress in Islamabad, Pakistan.

"Islam is a religion of tolerance and encourages everyone to live in peace, harmony, amity, brotherhood, and freedom of worship," he added.

Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister Rauf Hakeem also condemned the malicious motives of the Taliban saying that he would take immediate measures with diplomats of the Islamic countries to exert pressure on the Taliban. He was expressing these views just prior to his departure from the Bandaranaike International Airport, to the Islamic holy city "Mecca" in Saudi Arabia.

A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister of Highways, said that he was deeply concerned about Taliban's fanatical motives. "It must be emphasized that Islam teaches us to respect all religions and there is a specific Quranic version that there shall be no compulsion in religion and each one is assured of his religious liberty," he said.

He appealed to all Muslims in Sri Lanka to voice protest against the Taliban's senseless act.
