President’s Fund grants scholarships to 5460 students
[02 Mar 2001]

The Presidential Millennium Scholarship Scheme offered scholarships to 5460 children who have excelled in the GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations and participated significantly in co-curricular activities on Wednesday at the Presidential Secretariat.

The scheme, which is funded by the President’s Fund was introduced to prevent children from leaving school after the GCE Ordinary Level examinations.

“ Currently a significant number of children are compelled to give up school midstream due the lack of funds,” Ministry sources said.

Many of these children seek employment soon after their Ordinary Level examinations, not seeking any form of higher education due to financial difficulties.

Recipients of the grade five scholarship scheme and those receiving educational grants and other funding from different organizations will not be eligible for this scholarship scheme.

Sixty (60) children selected per education zone according to a marking scheme, will receive the scholarships from the President on the 28th February 2001, at the Presidential Secretariat at a special ceremony presided over by the Minister of Education.
