Kadirgamar hoping for ban of LTTE in Norway, Germany, France and Canada
[03 Mar 2001]

Addressing a news conference yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar stated, “the end of war is near with Norway, France, Germany, Australia and Canada looking to legislate bans against fund raising by terrorists groups including LTTE.”

Also he stressed that the British Government has acted “fairly, squarely and wisely” in the move of LTTE.  Minister Kadirgamar denied false news rep

that Minister would be flying to London, to personally thank the British government for the move, made.  The Minister thoroughly said it was a sovereign act made by a sovereign government and he applauded the British move though he had no intention of personally going there to thank the government.

He called upon the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka and said, “do not treat this as a blow against yourselves as the British were only applying law of their land.”  According to his statement, he called the Tamil nationals of Sri Lanka to look at the situation in a realistic perspective and say there had been a period of violence and therefore it was time to join hands with the other people of the country.

However, he expressed confidence that the ban would not affect the current peace process.  “The LTTE ceasefire offer was a last minute effort to show the British government that it is a reformed organisation and to put pressure on us” he said.  Minister Kadirgamar thanked India for the support in making representations to Britain regarding the banning of the LTTE.
