Sri Lankan exports have increased considerably in 2000

Exports of Sri Lanka have considerably increased during the last year.  Total exports including the same items of agricultural, industrial and mineral resources brought an income exceeding Rs. 420,00,000 million in 2000.

According to Sri Lanka Central Bank report the income received from exports in 1999 was Rs. 325,170.5 million.  It has increased to Rs.420, 114.4 million in 2000, which is an increase of 29.2%.

In terms of foreign exchange value export income last year has increased to $ 5,522.  It has an increase of 19.8%. 

In the overall exports industrial sector exports have increased and the garment sector income occupies an important place.  This sector has achieved a growth of 32.27% in 2000 over 1999 and the income received was Rs. 2,26,929 million.

The report further states that the import expenditure of Sri Lanka during the last year has increased by 32% as a result of the prices of essential food items like wheat, rice, sugar and petroleum prices steeply rising in the world market.
