He said that the Tamils not only have been forced to tolerate LTTE atrocities, but have also been suffering from the annihilation of any opposition and free thinking imposed by the LTTE.

Tamil politicians differ on role of the LTTE among the Tamil community
[05 Mar 2001]

P. Chandrasekaran, United National Party(UNP) MP and leader of the Upcountry People's Front, is quoted on the Eelamnation website that the LTTE is the only organisation to make a positive decision to end the eighteen year old conflict.

He is reported to have said that other Tamil political parties are co-operating with the Government for their own benefit while the LTTE is the only organisation fighting for the cause of the Tamils with the blessings of the International Community.

Meanwhile, Douglas Devananda, leader of the EPDP - a former armed Tamil group which has embraced democracy and taken to active politics - said that none would accept the LTTE as the sole representative of the Tamils, nor would their demand for a separate state be accepted by anyone as a solution to the ethnic conflict.

He said that the Tamils not only have been forced to tolerate LTTE atrocities, but have also been suffering from the annihilation of any opposition and free thinking imposed by the LTTE. He also accused the LTTE of conducting brutal massacres in border villages, and of extending its violence to other communities such as the Muslims.

Mr. Devananda said that no one would accept that a solution could not be found without the participation of the LTTE, and urged to reflect upon Britain's reasons for banning the LTTE.

He questioned as to why Britain, who once had nurtured independence and liberation movements, had all of a sudden shut its doors on the LTTE.

"The prime reason for this situation is the LTTE's failure to stick to the basic norms of democracy and its failure to judge correctly the changing global sentiment and environment."

He also highlighted the illegal trades of the LTTE such as drug trafficking and arms smuggling, which has gained international condemnation.
