Sri Lanka is gearing up to launch South Asia’s very first Distance Learning Project, which will be a sustainable worldwide network of interactive classrooms using advanced communication technology enabling “on-line-learning” in virtual classrooms. The World Bank has pledged a credit facility of US$ 2 million for this project, the Government’s contribution would be US$ 1 million. The Distance Learning Project will provide senior public and private sector decision makers with access to the most modern training materials, case studies and technical information in key areas of development. Real-time distance learning course modules are relayed by satellite from international universities and there will be interactive classroom sessions with over fifty worldwide centres using full voice and data connectivity. Experts from around the world will meet to discuss the leading issues to set up the project, which will take Sri Lanka a step further across the digital divide.
