Wildlife
Director on captured elephant's death
[06
Mar 2001]
Wildlife
Conservation Director A.P.A. Gunasekara said that he would fully support
the inquiry into the
death of a captured elephant to clear allegations made against him.
This report was a sequel to the story published in the state-owned
newspaper - Daily News two weeks ago, with a statement by Sathwa Mithra
(Friends of animals) asking the Director to step down after death of the
elephant.
He said that during the past eleven years, nearly 1400 wild elephants have
died in the jungles.
"Therefore there is no foundation for the statement made by Sathwa
Mithra requesting me to step down," he said.
He denied the statement made by Sathwa Mithra that Wildlife Department
veterans have no experience in tranquillising elephants.
However, he said that he would fully support any inquiry regarding
allegations made against him and accept punishment if proven guilty.
