Jaffna Teaching Hospital received US$ 500,000 [Rs 42 million] worth of medical equipment, by the US ambassador E Ashley Wills, who is on a two-day familiarisation visit to Jaffna. Dr Mrs. Kanakaratnam, the Director of the Hospital received equipment yesterday. The Jaffna Teaching Hospital is situated in the northern Jaffna peninsula where government forces are fighting a Tamil rebel group – the LTTE – for the past eighteen years. Addressing the ceremony, the Ambassador said, “I am pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of the US government and I am confident that it will assist the highly capable staff of the Teaching Hospital in helping Jaffna residents to live healthier lives.” This event marked the first donation of medical equipment, through the Humanitarian Assistance Programme administered by the US Defence Department. Previously, this Humanitarian Assistance Programme has donated drugs and other expertise to the National Hospital in Colombo and the Anuradhapura Hospital. The Humanitarian Assistance Programme is devoted to granting assistance to civilian institutions and it is a programme authorised by the Congress of the United States of America. Anaesthesia apparatus, a portable heart defibrillator, a dental treatment unit and therapeutic ultra sound equipment were among the equipment donated.
