Mothers donate eyes to mark Women's Day
[08 Mar 2001]

Thousands of mothers pledged to donate their eyes as a token of love and devotion for their children and wished for the unity and peace in the country. They were participating in a celebration at President's House on Thursday, to mark International Women's Day.

The occasion also marked the closing ceremony of "Veera Matha Nethra Pooja - The Donation of Eyes by Mothers". Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country. Giving vision or light to another person is a good deed according to Buddhism. Therefore this

Campaign subtly meant eliminating ignorance and viewing the bright world through the loving eyes of a mother.

The occasion gave a new vision to International Women's Day, which was celebrated internationally. The President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge who lost one eye in a terrorist bomb attack in December 1999, chaired the ceremony.

At the end of the ceremony, the Sri Lankan President requested all participants and the nation to join her in the wish; "with this good deed may there be peace in the country and let all the soldiers have good health".
