President Kumaratunga has directed three Ministers to submit special reports on matters recently spotlighted in newspapers. Minister of Health, W. D. J. Seneviratne, Minister of Science and Technology Leslie Gunewardena and Minister of Transport Dinesh Gunewardene were told to probe into the matters. According to a casual survey report the incidence of cancer in Sri Lanka has drastically increased in the last two to three decades. The survey, which was conducted about three years ago, showed the then increase was over nine times than in20 years. The President instructed the Minister of Health to conduct a study of the problem to ascertain the actual increase in the incidence of cancer in Sri Lanka in the last 25 years and the causes for same. The President further stressed the importance of controlling the large number of chemicals used in agriculture and for the control of malaria as most of these are already banned in many foreign countries. The Minister of Science & Technology Leslie Gunawardena has been directed to make a test of all chemicals that are commonly used in Sri Lanka for the above purposes, identify chemicals that are known to be dangerous and recommending measures such as legal action, awareness campaign etc. that need to be taken to prevent the use of chemicals. The President has also called for a report on a news item, which quoted the Deputy Minister of Transport as having mentioned that forty railway wagons purchased from Pakistan were not roadworthy. The Minister of Transport, Dinesh Gunawardena has been asked for a report.
