Plantation Union confident of success in negotiations
[12 Mar 2001]

The Minister of Livestock Development and Estate Infrastructure and the leader of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, Arumugam Thondaman said yesterday, “We are very confident that the negotiations will be concluded successfully.”

“In order to carry out our struggle legitimately, we have decided to withdraw the mutual agreement entered into with the Employer’s Federation on Tuesday.  After the withdrawal of the agreement, several other demands in addition to the payment of Rs. 400 would be forwarded to the Employers Federation.” said Minister Thondaman.

The Minister believes that the President and the government will intervene in the matter. Minister Thondaman is reported to have refused calls by several plantation trade unions not to vote with the government at the budget, if the demands of the unions are not met.
