Government cracks the whip on high-level corruption

An Army Colonel and seven suspects were produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and remanded till March 14 for their alleged involvement in a multi-million rupee military hardware scam.

The Criminal Investigation Department [CID] said that there would be more arrests made in connection with this fraud.

CID officials revealed that the Army had paid Rupees 9 million to a bogus business establishment using several forged vouchers submitted in November 2000.
