“We will leave no stone unturned to restore peace” – President Kumaratunga

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and her German counterpart Johannes Rau review the honour guard at the Presidential residence Bellevue Palace in Berlin.

“Sri Lanka now has the best opportunity for bringing an end to the ongoing ethnic conflict as ‘talks on talks’ with the LTTE are progressing well,” President Kumaratunga said. The Sri Lankan President is on a four-day official visit to Germany.

“We will not leave any stone unturned to explore the possibility of establishing peace. There is an air of optimism in Sri Lanka that we would be able to make good progress this year. People are willing to go a long way for peace, ” President said addressing German business leaders and investors.

The Government has maintained a consistent policy of inviting the LTTE for talks the President said. “Now it has shown some positive response.”

She praised Norway for its “excellent and useful role” as facilitator.
