"World should join hands to combat plague of terrorism" – CBK

Germany and Sri Lanka yesterday (14) agreed to jointly take all possible measures to fight international terrorism.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga stated in Berlin on Tuesday, that nations of the world should join hands to combat the 'plague of terrorism.' She was speaking at a banquet held in her honour by German President Johannes Rau.

President Kumaratunga said international co-operation was vital to take steps against the 'vast reach of terrorism'. Commenting on the situation in Sri Lanka, the President said Sri Lanka was working with Norway as facilitator in a major peace effort. "The day is not far away when we can begin negotiations (with the LTTE)".

She said the Government was committed to implementing a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

The President thanked Germany for its consistent support for the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignity of Sri Lanka. 

Diplomatic, cultural and trade links between the two countries have strengthened following the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1953. Germany is an important trading, development, investment partner for Sri Lanka.

"Germany and Sri Lanka are moving closer together in the age of globalisation. We are good partners. Relations between our countries are fruitful. We want to keep working at this," German President Johannes Rau said.
