The President of Pakistan, Muhammed Rafiq Tarar declared that he is sad over what has happened in Afghanistan, and stated that they share the common concern of the world community on this issue. General Pervez Musharaff, the Chief Executive stated that there was no sense or justification in blowing up the statues. He emphasized that he did his utmost to prevent this destruction by sending his Minister of Interior to prevail on the Taliban regime. He said that this action of the Taliban would adversely affect them from a religious, diplomatic and economic point of view. Pakistan’s views were made known when the Sri Lankan Prime Minister expressed the concern of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka over the senseless destruction of the pre-Islamic cultural artefacts including the world famous Bamiyan Buddha Statues by the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister and the Pakistan Chief Executive also discussed other bilateral and regional matters of concern. They agreed to enhance the existing economic cooperation between the two countries. In this regard they discussed the necessity to expedite the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement. General Musharaff specially thanked Sri Lanka for her active and continued support of SAARC (South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation). SAARC is the regional grouping of nations in South Asia and is currently chaired by Sri Lanka.
