Plantation
crisis resolved [15
Mar 2001]
Negotiations
between trade unions and companies brought a successful end to the 25-day
go-slow in the plantation sector.
The
Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and the Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC)
jointly agreed to increase the wage of estate workers’ by Rs. 9 per day.
The new wage package will be effective from March 15.
It
is estimated that the net loss as a result of the go-slow in the estate
sector was more than Rs. 800m(US$9.4m). To ensure a similar crisis does
not occur again, the unions and EFC have agreed that they shall not in any
manner act or attempt to vary or alter this remuneration package up to
June 30, 2002.
