The tragedy occurred as a bus carrying pilgrims from Adam’s Peak or Siri Paada – the famed mountain in Sri Lanka venerated by people of many religions for the footprint at its peak. Amidst heavy rains and mist, the bus had skidded and fallen down the precipice.

Among the dead were five women. Twenty-nine were injured in the accident. According to Police most of the victims were pilgrims.
