The Canadian government has decided to introduce a bill to make it possible to strip organizations of their charitable status if the groups are suspected of funding terrorist activities according to latest international reports. The new bill, which is expected to be presented by the Solicitor-General Lawrence MacAulay, will empower the Canadian Intelligence Service to nab any organisation which is promoting the cause of terrorism by way of funding or by any other method. Under the bill, groups like the Federation of Associations of Canadian Tamils (FACT) may be identified as a fundraising front for terrorists abroad, which ought not to benefit from Canadian tax laws. The Canadian Intelligence Service has already identified FACT as such a group in its effort to deport one of its organizers, Manickavasagam Suresh, to Sri Lanka. Following repeated appeals by the Sri Lankan President Kumaratunga and Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, a number of countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia and India have already taken steps to prevent terrorist fund raising activities.
