LTTE attempt to kill Tamil Minister bared
[19 Mar 2001]

An attempt plan to assassinate Minister of Estate Infrastructure and Livestock Development Arumugam Thondaman by a suicide bomber failed, when a special unit of the Nuwara Eliya Police tracked down a hardcore LTTE spy.

Minister Thondaman is the leader of the powerful trade union, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, representing the Indian Tamil population employed in the estate sector in Central Sri Lanka.

The suspect, Joseph Selvaraj alias Sinnathambi, who was taken into custody on 15 September 2000, revealed his plan after being tight lipped in custody for over six months.  The suspect whose LTTE name is Kalaimagar is a native of Muttur Erudevpuram, Trincomalee.

The Police also took into custody two domestics at Minister Thondaman's residence.  They have been reportedly acquainted with the LTTE suspect and had provided him with vital information about Minister's whereabouts.

The suspect had been observing the Minister's daily routine and had drawn a plan to assassinate the Minister, which was later supposed to be sent to his superior Aaron, at the training camp at Trincomalee who was to send two suicide cadres for the assassination.
