[19 Mar 2001]

Two of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated filmmakers, Dr. Lester James Peiris and his wife Sumitra Peiris were felicitated at the Third Asian Film festival in Deauville in France recently, “Le Figaro” reported.

The Deauvile film festival this year organised a special review on the work of Dr. and Mrs. Peiris screening three of Dr. Peiris’ films and one of Mrs. Peiris’ films at the festival.

In addition, Dr. and Mrs. Peiris were each awarded the prestigious medal of Deauville and the Golden Lotus of Deauville for their contribution to Sri Lankan and Asian cinema.

Dr. Peiris is best known for his film ‘Gamperaliya’ which depicts social revolution in a Sri Lankan village. A story movingly told on celluloid of the courage of a village girl, Gehenu Lamai, won many awards and accolades for Mrs. Peiris.
