A sophisticated academic network that will connect all universities in the country, will be officially commissioned on March 23 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall (BMICH) in Colombo. The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA), to enable the exchange of information between the local universities via the new network. The system will be on par with international network connectivity standards. The proceedings of the event will be shown online to SIDA in Stockholm and also to universities of Colombo, Ruhuna (South), Peradeniya (North Central Province), and Moratuwa (Colombo) via the new network. Under the training programme, eight Sri Lankan IT academics on "Split Ph.D. Programs" in various Swedish universities could spend half their study time in a university in Sweden and the balance period of study in Sri Lanka. The main project collaborators are the Institute of Computer Technology of the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka and the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) of the University of Stockholm and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) of Sweden. The participating universities from Sweden include Stockholm University, Upssala University, Chalmers University of Technology and Halmstad University. "The project is however aimed at not only benefiting IT education, but also to improve support for research in different fields carried out in universities and research institutes in Sri Lanka. One of the overall objectives is to make the project sustainable in the long term. Some of the components to be considered for further support include connectivity to additional institutions, international connectivity to new campus-wide networks, operation and maintenance of existing networks and coordination, administration and training to sustain the project," the Embassy of Sweden in Colombo said in a press release.
