“We are ready to negotiate if the LTTE really wants” says President Kumaratunga
[19 Mar 2001]

“Peace is essential for my country and the people are yearning for peace,” President Kumaratunga said.

President Kumaratunga has told European Commission (EC) President Romano Prodi during official talks in Brussels that “if the LTTE really wants to talk, the Government is ready.”

At the meeting, she had also had lengthy discussions with the EC President about the Norwegian efforts to bring both parties to the negotiating table. She has reiterated that the current peace initiative is the “best window of opportunity” for solving the ethnic conflict.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with the leading Belgian French daily “Le Soir”, the President pointed out that Sri Lanka would have been streets ahead of many countries in the region if not for the wasteful war.

India is fully supportive of the Norwegian peace efforts and Norway has kept India informed of all the latest developments, she added.
