Specialised heart surgical centre opens in Colombo
[23 Mar 2001]

A totally dedicated Heart Centre, in collaboration with one of Asia's leading Heart Institutes will be ceremonially opened at the Durdans Private Hospital in Colombo today.

The Durdans Heart Surgical Centre, will be specialized in interventional cardiology and open-heart surgery. It has established a strategic alliance with Escorts Heart Institute & Research Centre in New Delhi, India, a premier Heart Institute in the world.

A high-tech Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) with sophisticated modern medical equipment will also be opened, to provide round the clock medical care to the patients.

World-renowned cardiac surgeon, Dr. Naresh Trehan, is now in Sri Lanka for the opening of the heart surgical centre.

Congestion at the cardiac surgery centres at the National Hospital in Colombo and the Sri Jayawardene Hospital, both state hospitals, has forced many patients to seek medical treatment abroad. There is a two-year waiting list for cardiac surgery in these two hospitals.

In a message to mark the occasion, President Kumaratunga has said, "I am happy to learn that an increasing number of private hospitals are taking up the challenge of meeting the demand for coronary care, taking advantage of numerous concessions granted by the government.

Health Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne has said, "I am extremely pleased to see a flourishing private health sector looking after a major component of health care."
