"I felt that the people of Jaffna were only keen to have the fighting stopped and see that unity is achieved," said Rev. Dr. Konrad Raiser, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Colombo last week. He was responding to a question about his impressions after a one-day visit to the war-torn northern Jaffna peninsula. He said that they were aware of the human rights violations carried out by the LTTE, specially the recruitment of child soldiers, and strongly condemned such activities. Dr. Konrad Raiser was in Sri Lanka for a five-day visit to have a dialogue with other religions in Sri Lanka. The WCC represents forty million Christians worldwide. The head of the WCC also had discussions with Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development, Prof. G.L. Peiris on the government’s endeavours for a political settlement to the ethnic conflict. Dr. Raiser said that in discussions he and his delegation had with civic and religious bodies in Colombo, he had received the impression that everyone wanted the fighting stopped.
