Sri Lanka’s first Interactive Library System launches next week
[26 Mar 2001]

The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) of Sri Lanka, will launch the country's first integrated interactive library system next week.

ITI is the successor to the Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR), and is the premier multidisciplinary scientific research and service organization in the country. The library attached to the Center is one of the largest technical libraries in Sri Lanka with the best overall collection of scientific and technical literature.

The new e-library will benefit a cross section of the public in industrial, scientific and commercial sectors as well as non-governmental organizations and national and international funding agencies.

With the new facility, members can perform online queries and reservations. The new system also keeps the users regularly informed of the latest books and articles according to their individual interests via a programmed user profile.

"It is one of the few special libraries in the country to make available its resources to the interested public", says the ITI website

Among the wide spectrum of resources that is available online, the Special Collection section will focus on the ever-increasing demand for information needs in the industrial sector of the country.

The Reference Collection consists of over 2000 major reference tools including handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, directories, brochures and annual reports of organizations. The Sri Lanka Collection has several literary works relating to Sri Lanka, while the ITI Publications has all publications by ITI scientists and the Abstracts Collections includes major abstract journals such as Chemical Abstracts.
