The Asian Productivity Organisation will today confer the prestigious APO National Award 2000 to a Sri Lankan for the first time. The award is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the cause of increasing the productivity in Sri Lanka. Sunil G. Wijesinha, the recepient of the prestigious award, has been the key figure in introducing many Japanese productivity improvements such as Quality Circles, 5s, Kaizen TPM and TQM in Sri Lanka. Mr. Wijesinghe helped launch the National Productivity Campaign, which has created significant interest in Productivity in Sri Lanka. These productivity improvement tools had been successfully introduced to several commercial establishments and schools throughout the island and the output of these institutions have increased significantly. The Asian Productivity Organisation was created in 1961 to oversee productivity development throughout Asia and the Pacific. Today, the APO serves as the umbrella organisation for 18 countries to co-ordinate and assist their individual productivity activities. These countries, through their respective National Productivity Organisations, work closely together for mutual co-operation, economic progress, and a better quality of life for their peoples. The presentation of awards which commenced in 1990 are conferred once in every five years on persons who have made outstanding contribution to the promotion of productivity in their respective countries.
