Speaker of Parliament leads delegation to Cuba
[27 Mar 2001]

The Speaker of parliament Anura Bandaranaike is to lead a multi party delegation to the Inter-parliamentary Conference in Havana. The conference will be held from the 1st to the 6th of April in the Cuban capital.

The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the world organisation of parliaments of sovereign States. It was established in 1889. The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.

Mr. Bandaranaike is also expected to have a private meeting with the Cuban President Fidel Castro. Cordial relations between Sri Lanka and Cuba date back to the time when Mr. Bandaranaike's late mother Ms Sirimavo Bandaranaike and President Castro played pioneering roles in the Non aligned movement in the seventies. Mr. Bandaranaike will also meet the Speaker of the British House of Commons Michael Martin.
