Luxury cruisers flock to Colombo
[28 Mar 2001]

Twenty-Two passenger liners have called at Colombo Port so far this year. Tourism industry officials are optimistic that the trend would continue although the popular Nippon Maru is likely to skip its scheduled visit to Colombo next month.

The world’s biggest luxury liner, Queen Elizabeth II, docked at Colombo recently.

Other popular passenger cruisers such as Minerva, Crystal Symphony and Ocean Majesty have also brought holidaymakers to Sri Lanka.

More than 6,000 passengers and around 3,000 crewmembers have disembarked at Colombo so far.

The ongoing peace process and the resultant scaling down of the conflict in north-east Sri Lanka are expected to boost tourism in this tropical island which boasts of golden beaches and ruins of ancient civilisations.
