House of Lords unanimously approves Anti Terrorism Act
[29 Mar 2001]

The British House of Lords has unanimously approved the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2000 proscribing twenty-one international terrorist groups including the LTTE, from operating in the UK. All LTTE activities in Britain will cease forthwith as a result.

Till recently the LTTE had its International Headquarters at Katherine Road in London from where its operations were carried out quite openly. The LTTE's news release last week extending their unilateral ceasefire was issued from the Wanni jungles in northern Sri Lanka.

The fund raising activities and publicity of all foreign terrorist organisations have also been prohibited.

The proscription will come into effect the day after the Home Secretary makes the order. It will then be open to any of the organisations so proscribed, or any person affected by the proscription, to make an appeal to the Home Secretary.
