Several major industries in Colombo's suburbs will be moved to an Eco-friendly park, 43 kms south from the city by April 2001. The proposed 'Cleaner Production Park' is to be constructed with Asian Development Bank (ADB) assistance. Over sixty high and medium polluters (industries) have been identified for relocation said Mr. Roy Jayasinghe Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Industrial Development. Mr. Jayasinghe said that an "alternative sight" for spillovers has been identified in the Kalutara District, 43 Km South of the Capital. This new environmental-friendly location would be ideal for these industries. The proposed 'techno-rich Village' as the official put it, would enable local industries the unique opportunity to modernize their enterprises, he said, 'Cleaner Technology' will help investors achieve environmental standards. The new concept will optimize production and help follow environmental specifications. The will also help investors to reduce cost as well as acquire the environmental safe label 'ISO 14001' or 'green label' which has become an essential stamp to compete in the global market.
