Sri Lankan Tea-export earnings on the rise
[30 Mar 2001]

Sri Lanka's Tea export earnings increased by 32% in the fist two months of this year, however the increase in the volume of exports was only 8% when compared to the export figures during the same period of last year. There was a downturn in production in February due to labor disputes in the plantations in the central hills.

Chrisantha Perera - Chairman of the Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said Sri Lanka performed favorably well in 2000. He attributed the current improved performance in monetary terms, to the devaluation of rupee against the dollar. However the impact of the recent labour disputes he said, would be experienced around April this year.

Sri Lanka is the World's largest tea exporter. World tea production during the fist quarter any year is normally low, because Sri Lanka, Kenya, and South India experience dry weather conditions while North India and Bangladesh face winter.
